The Fawcett Society has been around since 1866, when the women’s rights campaigner Millicent Fawcett organized a petition to Parliament, asking that women be granted the right to vote. The society that sprang up to support this peaceful movement was named after its champion, and today Fawcett has evolved into an organisation that campaigns for gender equality.
The result of 2010′s General Election saw a Conservative-led coalition come to power, and their policy of cutting the jobs and benefits that support women is now threatening to undo years of progress towards a more equal society. The unfair impact that these cuts are having on women is partly why East London Fawcett formed in summer 2011, but the prime reason for coming together now is to give local women a platform to meet and organize around whatever issues that affect them most. We are a positive, inclusive, women-led group that has big plans for the future, and we welcome thoughts and energy from any east Londoner keen to do something proactive for equality.
